Syrian Arabic Voices is designed to provide intermediate and advanced students of Arabic with an opportunity to hear and study authentic Levantine Arabic as it is spoken by native speakers today. Improve your comprehension of Levantine Arabic by using its audio component alongside the guided exercises in the book. Unlike the scripted materials read by voice actors used in many coursebooks, Syrian Arabic Voices offers dozens of audio essays spoken naturally and off-the-cuff by individuals from around Syria.
Each segment consists of:
- accompanying audio tracks available for free download below.
- vocabulary and comprehension exercises to sharpen your listening skills and increase how much you can understand
- in-chapter answers to the exercises (no having to flip back and forth to the back of the book)
- verbatim transcripts of the audio with side-by-side English translations.
- lined sections for taking notes and recording new vocabulary.
Six native speakers from around Syria have each contributed six audio essays on various topics, which in total make up the 36 segments found in this book. The contributors were recorded speaking naturally and spontaneously, without reading prepared texts. The audio essays were then transcribed in Arabic script and translated into English. Studying these texts is a unique opportunity to better understand the patterns, usage, and idiosyncrasies of Arabic as spoken by Syrians today.

Overall I find this book to be a really awesome addition to my Levantine learning, the audio quality, variety of topics, and varying lengths, speed and accents of speech are great! The only constant issue I’ve noticed is that many of the multiple choice answers in the answer keys are incorrect. However I will most definitely continue using this book as a resource to further my skills in Levantine and will continue to highly recommend it to anyone interested in developing their skills!

I love it and find the voices, characters as well as stories interesting. I only wish I had bought the “real” book. The pdf papers just not so much fun to work with . I bought Arabic voices as book, and it is just more fun to study than the papers. But by any means, go for it.

Honestly, a dream resource. The exercises are helpful, the transcripts perfectly spaced to follow the text, and the speech is perfectly natural (unlike so many other resources). I got the PDF version and it’s working quite well, though from time to time I do print them to be able to read off paper.

This is an excellent resource for so many reasons. It is wonderful for training your ear to listen to natural (and sometimes rapid) speech. It is also a great resource for learning the differences between Syrian Arabic and, say, Lebanese Arabic. You will learn to adjust your ear to the way things are pronounced in Syria. Lastly, the stories are really poignant and give us a better idea about the lives and experiences of people affected by the Syrian war.

Like any other product from lingualism, I absolutely love it. Amazing stories from six people who fled the war, talking in native speech about their experiences. Learning new vocabulary in context of understanding every person’s story makes it much more powerful. lingualism’s products are a treasure trove for learning the Arabic language and Arabic dialects.
