    مرحبا بكم جميعا

If I want to say something like “The ten best books I have read” or “The five biggest cities in the world” is the following correct?

    أفضل عشرة كتب قرأتها

    And

    أكبر خمس مدن في العالم

I guess my question in general is when we want to express something like the above examples, the basic structure is اسم التفضيل first, then العدد. I was trying to come up with a reason why اسم التفضيل has to come before العدد, and the only reason I came up with is because العدد و المعدود cannot have anything separating them. So for instance, we cannot say عشرة أفضل كتب or خمس أكبر مدن, because the عدد and معدود would be separated. Is this correct?

    Hi,

The structure of the first two sentences is correct and is the norm in MSA.

However, I’ve seen the structure of the last two sentences in newspapers and articles…So they are also correct.

    Late to the party…

I think I have also heard خمس أكبر مدن في العالم more than I have heard أكبر خمس مدن. Is it more a matter of individual user/speaker preference, or is one way of saying it actually better than the other?

    ألف شكر وشكر
