The Egyptian Revolution–Alaa

Greetings and welcome! [00:00]السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته. أهلاً ومرحبًا بكم.
Today we will talk about what Alaa said about the Egyptian revolution, and we will comment on the different words and terms she used. [00:05]اليوم سنتحدّث عمّا قالته آلاء بشأن الثورة المصرية، وسنعلّق على ما استخدمته من كلماتٍ ومصطلحاتٍ مختلفة.
So let's start on page 150 on line 2. Alaa says, "Before the revolution, I practically wasn't involved in political affairs, but I was very interested in them." [00:15]فهيّا بنا نبدأ في الصفحة المائة وخمسون في السطر الثاني—تقول آلاء: (قبل الثورة لم أكن مشاركةً بشكلٍ عملي في الشأن السياسي، ولكني كنت مهتمةٌ به جدًا).
We would like to comment here on the preposition that Alaa used with the word مهتمة [interested]. She says that someone is 'interested in' something, so بـ should be used with this word. [00:34]نودّ التعليق هنا على حرف الجر الذي استخدمته آلاء مع كلمة [مهتمة]، تقول أن شخصًا مهتم [مهتمًا بـ] شيءٍ ما، فلا بدّ من استخدام [الباء] مع هذه الكلمة.
I am interested in public affairs. I am interested in reading. I am interested in doing something. The preposition بJ must be used with this word. [00:54](أنا مهتمٌ بالشأن العام، أنا مهتمٌ بالقراءة أنا، مهتمٌ بفعل أمرٍ ما)، فلا بدّ من استخدام حرف [ الباء] مع هذه الكلمة.
Then we move on to line 3, where Alaa says, “But I was content with reading the news, following current events, etc." [01:08]بعد ذلك ننتقل إلى السطر الثالث، حيث تقول آلاء: (ولكني كنت أكتفي بالاطلاع على الأخبار، ومتابعة الأحداث الجارية، وما إلى ذلك).
وما إلى ذلك (etc.) is a phrase that means that the rest of the sentence or the rest of the speech refers to something that the listener infers or that the reader infers. [01:23][وما إلى ذلك] هي عبارة تعني أن باقي الجملة أو ما تبقى من الكلام يشير إلى أمرٍ يستنتجه السامع أو يستنتجه القارئ.
You can also say وهكذا. Both mean, for example, “I want to learn Arabic, so I study my lessons, do my homework, etc. or so on." I study my lessons, do my homework, and so on... Et cetera... and so on. [01:37]يمكنك كذلك أن تقول [وهكذا]. [وما إلى ذلك] أو [وهكذا] يعني مثلًا: (أنا أريد أن أتعلم العربية، فأنا أذاكر دروسي، وأكتب واجباتي، وما إلى ذلك أو وهكذا)، (أذاكر دروسي، أكتب واجباتي، وهكذا ... وما إلى ذلك ... وهكذا).
Then we move on to line 13, where Alaa says, "We were standing in black clothes, facing the sea or the Nile, and with our backs towards the street, in complete silence, as an expression of protest that we rejected the situation we have come to." [02:01]ننتقل بعد ذلك إلى السطر الثالث عشر -حيث تقول آلاء: (كنا نقف بملابس سوداء، متجهين بوجوهنا ناحية البحر أو ناحية النيل، و بظهورنا ناحية الشارع، بصمتٍ تام؛ كمظهرٍ للاحتجاج بأننا رافضين الوضع الذي وصلنا إليه).
We would like to comment here on what Alaa said after or when using the preposition لـ (in order to) as a manifestation of protest. [02:27]ونودّ التعليق هنا على ما قالته آلاء بعد أو عند استخدام حرف [ اللام] كمظهرٍ للاحتجاج.
And you can use the preposition لـ as we mentioned earlier, to mention the purpose of doing something. "They do this (in order) to protest." And the purpose or goal of that is protest, so… we use the preposition لـ. [02:37]ويمكنك أن تستخدم حرف [ اللام] كما ذكرنا سابقًا، لذكر الغاية من فعل أمرٍ ما، (فهم يفعلون ذلك للاحتجاج) والغاية أو الهدف من ذلك هو الاحتجاج ف… نستخدم حرف [ اللام].
As you can see, the preposition لـ here is attached to the masdar (verbal noun), so the masdar here follows the preposition, and it is an explicit masdar as you saw 'as a manifestation in order to protest.' [02:55]وكما ترى فحرف اللام هنا يلحقه [المصدر]، فالمصدر هنا يلي حرف اللام، وهو مصدر صريح كما رأيت (كمظهرٍللاحتجاج).
For example, you could say, "I went to the office to see my boss..." "To meet my boss." You use the preposition لـ to state the purpose or goal of doing something, and then append it the masdar 'to meet my boss.' [03:09]يمكنك أن تقول مثلًا: (أنا ذهبت إلى المكتب لمقابلة رئيسي... لمقابلة رئيسي)، تستخدم حرف [ اللام] لذكر الغاية أو الهدف من فعل أمرٍ ما، ثم بعد ذلك تلحقه [بالمصدر] (لمقابلة رئيسي).
We would also like to comment on how the masdar is used after the preposition لـ here. The masdar is after the preposition لـ if it does not start with the definite article الـ. [03:30]نود التعليق كذلك على كيفية استخدام [المصدر] بعد حرف [ اللام] هنا، فالمصدر بعد حرف اللام إن لم يكن يبدأ بالألف واللام،
As we said, “I went to the office to meet my boss. If there is no definite article, it is understandable just use the masdar. [03:43]كما قلنا: (ذهبت إلى المكتب لمقابلة رئيسي)، إن لم يكن هناك ألف ولام فهذا أمر مفهوم فقط تستخدم المصدر.
But if you use the definite article, then you say, for example, “I went to the office for the interview.” Then you use the infinitive with the definite article: 'the' interview. So, when linking the masdar to the preposiiton, you drop the alif and say لِلـ [lil-] and not لِـ الـ. You drop the alif and say 'for the interview.' 'I went for the interview' and so on. [03:54]ولكن إن استخدمت الألف واللام فتقول مثلًا: (أنا ذهبت إلى المكتب للمقابلة)، فتستخدم المصدر مع الألف واللام (المقابلة)، فعندربط المصدر باللام تُسقِط الألف تقول (للمقابلة)، وليس (لـِ المقابلة)، تسقِط الألف وتقول (للمقابلة... ذهبت للمقابلة) وهكذا.
Great! We then move to line 14, where Alaa says, "Then the revolution came, especially after the revolution took place in Tunisia, and it succeeded, so the Egyptians felt that the time had come." [04:25]عظيم! ننتقل بعد ذلك إلى السطر الرابع عشر، حيث تقول آلاء: (ثم جاءت الثورة، خاصةً بعدما قامت الثورة في تونس، ونجحت، فشعر المصريين أنه قد حان الوقت).
When you say, “The time has come," it means that this is the time for an event that must happen at that time. [04:43]عندما تقول أن: (الوقت قد حان، أو قد حان الوقت، الوقت قد حان، أو قد حان الوقت)، معناه أن هذا هو الوقت الملائم لحدثٍ ما، لا بدّ أن يحدث في هذا الوقت.
"It's time for a change. It's time to start a new job. It means that now is the best time and the right time for something to happen. [04:59](قد حان الوقت للتغيير، قد حان الوقت لبدء عملٍ جديد)، فمعناه أن الوقتالآن هو الوقت الأفضل والوقت المناسب لحدوث شيءٍ ما.
Great! We then move on to line 13. Another term or phrase that we use often in Arabic, Alaa used here, and it is "the straw that broke the camel's back." [05:15]عظيم! ننتقل بعد ذلك إلى السطر الثالث عشر؛ وهناك مصطلح آخر أو عبارة أخرى نستخدمها كثيرًا باللغة العربية، قد استخدمتها آلاء هنا وهي [القشة التي قسمت ظهر البعير].
It is the straw that broke the camel's back in the Tunisian revolution, and this is on line 16. [05:34]وهي القشة التي قسمت ظهر البعير بثورة تونس، وهذا في السطر السادس عشر.
The straw that broke the camel's back means that this event is the one that ended everything. This event is what caused the events that followed, [05:40]القشة التي قسمت ظهر البعير معناه أن هذا الحدث هو الذي قد أنهى كل شيء، هذا الحدث هو الذي سبب ما تلاه من أحداث،
even if the event was simple, it is... it is the one that led to the end of a matter or time, and the beginning of a new matter or time. [05:54]فحتى وإن كان الحدث بسيط إلى أنه... إلى أنه هو الذي أدى إلى نهاية أمرٍ أو زمنٍ ما، وبداية أمر جديد أو زمنٍ جديد.
For example, you say, "I don't like... I didn't like my job, but when my boss charged me, it was the straw that broke the camel's back). [06:07]تقول مثلًا: (أنا لا أحب... لم أكن أحب عملي، ولكن عندما خصم لي مديري مالًا، كانت هذه القشة التي قسمت ظهر البعير)،
That is, this last event, the opponent, was the end of it all, so I quit this job. The straw that broke the camel's back. [06:19]أي أن هذا الحدث الأخير الخصم هو كان نهاية كل شيء، فأنا تركت هذا العمل [القشة التي قسمت ظهر البعير].
The straw is a very simple thing, but because the camel was carrying so many things, this straw broke its back, so the simple thing that comes after so many bad things, may be 'the straw that broke the camel's back.' [06:31]القشة شيء بسيط جدًا، ولكن لأن البعير كان يحمل أشياء كثيرة جدًا، هذه القشة قسمت ظهره، فالشيء البسيط الذي يأتي بعد أشياء سيئة كثيرة، قد يكون [القشة التي قسمت ظهر البعير].
Great! We then move on to line 25, and we want to do a quick review here of what she said... to what we have referred to before, which is the… Using the verb يستطيع (can). [06:51]عظيم! ننتقل بعد ذلك إلى السطر الخامس والعشرون، ونريد أن نراجع مراجعة سريعة هنا إلى ما قالت... إلى ما كنا قد أشرنا إليه من قبل وهو ال… استخدام الفعل يستطيع أو الفعل يستطع.
When we use this verb, this verb is attached to a masdar. We say here you have agreed... Or Alaa says here, “I had made an agreement that day to meet my best friend, but we couldn't get there." [07:13]عندما نستخدم هذا الفعل فيكون هذا الفعل ملحق بالمصدر، نقول هنا كنت قد اتفقت... أو تقول آلاء هنا: (كنت قد اتفقت ذلك اليوم إلى أن ألتقي مع صديقتي المقربة، ولكننا لم نستطع الوصول).
"But we could not arrive." 'Arrival' after the verb 'can.' So, we use the masdar after the verb, and we have explained this before, but I wanted to review here quickly. [07:32](ولكننا لم نستطع الوصول.) [الوصول] بعد فعل يستطع فنستخدم المصدر بعد الفعل يستطع وهذا كنا قد شرحناه من قبل، ولكن وددت المراجعة هنا سريعًا.
Then we move on to line 30. Alaa says, "Of course, I found many, or there were many wounded, etc., after some clashes... After some clashes..." and the word إثر means عقب. [07:46]بعد ذلك ننتقل إلى السطر الثلاثون -تقول آلاء: (وطبعًا وَجَدت العديد أو وُجِدت العديد من الجرحى، وما إلى ذلك، إثر بعض الاشتباكات… إثر بعض الاشتباكات) وكلمة [إثر] تعني [عقب].
You can use إثر; you can use عقب; you can use بعد. [08:09]يمكنك أن تستخدم [إثر]، يمكنك أن تستخدم [عقب]، يمكنك أن تستخدم [بعد].
The wounded... These wounded were found after… after some clashes, or after some clashes, or after some clashes. [08:14]فالجرحى... هؤلاء الجرحى وجدوا بعد… بعد بعض الاشتباكات، أو عقب بعض الاشتباكات، أو إثر بعض الاشتباكات؛
That is, in the dimension of some clashes, the word 'ether' or 'after' or 'after' means one. [08:26]أي في بعد بعض الاشتباكات، كلمة [إثر أو عقب أو بعد] بمعنّا واحد.
You can say, for example, "I spoke to him after the interview, or I read the passage after I finished the lesson," and so on. They all have the same meaning. [08:34]يمكنك أن تقول مثلًا: (أنا كلّمته إثر المقابلة، أو أنا قمت بقراءة القطعة إثر انتهائي من الدرس)، وهكذا، [إثر، عقب، أو بعد] بمعنّا واحد.
We then move on to line 31. Alaa says, "After that day, we went down again and again," a phrase we use often in Arabic. [08:54]ننتقل بعد ذلك إلى السطر الواحد والثلاثون—وتقول آلاء: (بعد ذلك اليوم نزلنا مرارًا وتكرارًا)، وهذه عبارة نستخدمها كثيرًا في اللغة العربية.
We say, "I did this thing over and over again," that is, I did it a lot; I did not do it once or twice, but I did it over and over again. [09:07]نقول: [فعلت هذا الشيء مرارًا وتكرارًا]، أي فعلته كثيرًا فلم أفعله مرة واحدة أو مرتين، بل أنا فعلته مرارًا وتكرارًا.
For example, “I applied for this job over and over again. That is, I didn’t apply once or twice; I did it a lot [over and over]. [09:19]مثلًا: (أنا تقدمت إلى هذه الوظيفة مرارًا وتكرارًا)، أي أنني لم أتقدم مرة واحدة أو اثنتين، بل أنا فعلت هذا الأمر كثيرًا [مرارًا وتكرارًا].
We then move on to line 38, where Alaa says, “I can say that I have never regretted my participation in this revolution, but unfortunately it has failed or has not yet succeeded." [09:33]ننتقل بعد ذلك إلى السطر الثامن والثلاثون—حيث تقول آلاء: (أستطيع أن أقول أنني لم أندم يومًا على مشاركتي في هذه الثورة، ولكنها للأسف فشلت أو لم تنجح بعد).
So, Alaa uses the word بعد (yet) here to mean that... to mean حتى الآن (yet), which isn't a preposition like we used above. Or it is not followed by a masdar as we usually use it, but here it means that... that hasn't worked 'yet.' [09:52]فتستخدم آلاء هنا كلمة [بعد] بمعنى أنه... بمعنى [حتى الآن] فهي ليست حرف جر كما نستخدمه أولا... أو لا يتليها المصدر كما نستخدمه عادةً، و لكن هنا تعني أنه... أن هذا الأمر لم ينجح حتى الآن.
You say, for example, "I haven't studied my lessons yet," meaning "yet" here, that is, until now. [10:13]تقول مثلًا: (أنا لم أذاكر دروسي بعد)، ومعنى بعد هنا أي حتى الآن.
"I haven't finished work yet," meaning 'yet' here so... that is, 'so far.' [10:21](أنا لم أنتهي من العمل بعد)، ومعنى بعد هنا ف...أي حتى الآن.
You can use بعد or حتى الآن in this context. Both are correct. You can say either "haven't succeeded yet" or "haven't succeeded yet" with the same meaning. [10:27]يمكنك أن تستخدم [بعد] أو [حتى الآن] في هذا السياق فكلاهما صحيح، يمكنكأن تقول ( أو لم تنجح حتى الآن، أو لم تنجح بعد) بمعنّا واحد.
Great! We then move on to line 46. On line 46, Alaa says, "We have to raise awareness." [10:40]عظيم! ننتقل بعد ذلك إلى السطر السادس والأربعون، ففي السطر السادس والأربعون—تقول آلاء: (فعلينا بالتوعية).
And here I would like to review quickly, what we said before: that عليك (upon you)–or us or him–are used for advice. [10:55]وهنا أود المراجعة سريعًا، كنا قد قلنا من قبل أن [عليك] أو [علينا] أو [عليه] تستخدم للنصيحة.
I say, for example, “You should do good, or you should read; you should study.” This is used for advice and means 'should.' [11:03]أقول مثلًا: (عليك بفعل الخير، أو عليك بالقراءة، عليك بالمذاكرة)، فهذه تستخدم للنصيحة ومعناها أن [ينبغي أن].
"So we have to educate." We should raise people's awareness, and thus, we must educate 'upon you to,' used for advice, and we have explained this before but I wanted to review quickly. [11:14](فعلينا بالتوعية) فينبغي أن نوعي الشعب، وهكذا، فعلينا بالتوعية [عليك بـ] تستخدم للنصيحة، وكنا قد شرحنا هذا من قبل ولكن أود المراجعة سريعًا.
Finally, we end with what Alaa said on line 49. "He must recover from the causes that led to this tumor," and [أدّت إلى (led to) something about the cause. [11:32]أخيرًا ننتهي بما قالتهآلاء في السطر التاسع والأربعون—تقول (لا بدّ له من أن يتعافى من الأسباب التي أدّت إلى هذا الورم)، و[أدّت إلى] شيء يتحدّث عن السبب.
You can say "it led to this tumor" or "caused this tumor" from the reasons that led to this tumor, that is, they caused this tumor, "leading to" in the sense of 'cause.' [11:54]يمكنك أن تقول (أدّت إلى هذا الورم) أو (سبّبت هذا الورم) من الأسباب التي أدّت إلى هذا الورم أي سبّبت هذا الورم [فأدّى إلى] بمعنى [سبّب].
With this, we have finished commenting on what Alaa said about the Egyptian revolution, and what she used of different words and phrases. [12:09]وبهذا نكون قد انتهينا من التعليق عمّا قالته آلاء بشأن الثورة المصرية، وما استخدمته من كلماتٍ وعباراتٍ مختلفة.
I hope you have benefited from this video. [12:20]أتمنى أن تكونوا قد استفدتم من هذا الفيديو.
