Use Anki’s SRS (spaced repetition system) to study the vocabulary of Modern Standard Arabic, while improving your listening and reading skills and overall fluency.
Anki is a free desktop software program that intelligently schedules items to be reviewed at the most efficient time possible.
Card layout: 1) Arabic dictionary head word; 2) Morphological information (verb measure, conjugation, masdar; noun/adjective plural, etc.); 3) On reveal, English translation(s) are shown; 4) On reveal, the full dictionary entry is shown with collocations and example sentences, etc.
IT’S EASY! If you don’t already have Anki, visit the Anki website and download the free desktop program. Once Anki is installed, simply click on the files for the Arabic Learner’s Dictionary deck you have purchased. (Because of its large size, the deck is split into two files.) They will automatically import into Anki. Open Anki and you will see the deck ready for study.
With over 10,000 flashcards, this massive Anki deck contains the entire contents of the Lingualism Arabic Learner’s Dictionary. The deck includes reverse-cards, bringing the actual total number of cards to over 20,000. These reverse-cards show the English translation first, forcing you to see how well you can recall the Arabic. See the sample images to get a better understanding of the cards’ layouts.
Audio for the headword of each card has been professionally recorded by a native speaker of Arabic.
The default setting on Anki is to introduce 20 new cards per day. If you want to change the daily new-card limit, you can do so by going into settings → options (next to the deck’s name).
There are three ways you can study the cards:
- Alphabetical order: By default, cards will be presented in alphabetical order.
- Random order: Click Options and set the order to “show new cards in random order.”
- Only specific words: If you prefer to focus on specific words, you can suspend all cards (so that they are not presented) and unsuspend only those you which to be tested on. To suspend all cards: Browse → Current Deck → highlight all cards → Suspend. Then search for cards you want to be tested on and click “suspend” to unsuspend them. Unfortunately, Anki has some search limitations. You may not be able to find an Arabic word if you do not type the exact diacritics. To get around this, download the add-on “Ignore accents in browser search” (code: 1924690148), which adds a check-box next to the search bar. For more tips on searching in Anki, click here.
Press r to repeat a card’s audio. You can record your voice (shft+V) and replay it (v) to compare your pronunciation. For any other questions regarding the use of the Anki program, please refer to the documentation on the Anki site.
