The timeless love story of Romeo and Juliet has been brought to life for the first time as a novelized adaptation for learners of Arabic. This story was chosen as it is well known to Western audiences; being familiar with the characters and plot of a story will help you focus less on what the story is about and more on the language.
- The story has been divided into eight chapters of similar, manageable length for learners.
- Each chapter features: 1) the voweled text; 2) vocabulary lists; 3) English translations
- When the name of a character or place makes its first appearance in the book, it is shown in bold.
- Words and phrases that appear in the vocabulary section (glossary) are underlined in the text with a subtle dotted line. They are organized by order of appearance and grouped by the page number on which they appear.
- A noun or adjective will be listed in its singular form, and if its plural is irregular, this will be shown in parentheses.
- A verb will be shown in its base form followed by a reference code in small square brackets. This corresponds to a table showing the verb’s complete conjugation patterns in Lingualism’s book Modern Standard Arabic Verbs. The masdar (gerund) of unaugmented (measure I) verbs is given in parentheses. The masdar for augmented verbs is also normally given when they appear in the book.
- Many nouns (including masdars) and adjectives (including active and passive participles) act as adverbs in the indefinite accusative case or in conjunction with a preposition. These are often glossed as the basic form of the word, so you can see each word’s original meaning and how it can be used as an adverb in context.

This is a good product, and the audio files are useful. I think a parallel text format would be better, as I keep checking the translation to see if I have understood new and unfamiliar words based on the context. The vocabularies are comprehensive, and the fully vowelized text is a big help. Keep up the good work, Matthew. Best regards. Philip

I LOVE this book! This is my first attempt to read a book in Arabic and it makes me feel very motivated that I can basically understand and follow the story. THe vocabulary pages are really helpful in this. You can indeed understand the main plot of what’s happening even if you are not fluent. I’ve had to re-read the chapters to better understand but this is mostly for learning. It’s definitely worth the money; I have the PDF and paper back book.

This is an awesome book, my favorite intermediate level Arabic reader. The fact that it features both a translation and a vocabulary list makes it highly useful for learners at different levels. I have read it three times as I have been progressing in my studies, each time resorting less and less to the translations, and it has been of enormous help to acquire and consolidate vocabulary. I am awed by all the thought and care the authors have visibly put into this work.

This book fills a useful gap in the market. As a learner of Arabic I tend to find it difficult to find graded reading books and listening materials. I like that this book is based on a familiar story (and is thus easier to understand), and having a vowelised and unvowelised version is a nice touch. The addition of vocabulary lists and translations are useful, although I also would have preferred a parallel-text layout to facilitate referring back to the translation. But overall a very useful resource.
