To feel the spirit of the holiday, we should go to the Ma’arad in the evening to release lanterns into the sky. A lantern will be the reason for a poor child to attend school. That is, all the money being collected from this event support children to attend school. So, this event is a two-in-one because we are going out, getting together, and having fun all while feeling the spirit of the holiday. And above all, we are also helping out the needy. Each year more than a thousand people from all over Lebanon and from different countries come out to light up Tripoli’s sky [with lanterns]. The feeling you get when we are all gathered to release the lanterns and new people you meet… it is an unbelievably amazing feeling. It boosts the joy in the heart because you find everyone helping or teaching each other how to light this lantern and the nicer part is that people of all ages come to join, from babies in their strollers to the grandfather coming with his grandchildren. Of course, let’s not forget the people whose lanterns burn up before they can fly away. The lucky ones among them are the ones who get to take several photos with [their lantern]. And there are the ones who run after their lantern to make sure it survives to fly away. And some [people] have the nice idea to write a message and sent it with the lantern. They hope it’ll come down somewhere where someone might read it. Anyway, the last view the sky of Tripoli is lit up with lanterns. The atmosphere and view are amazing. I always look forward to this event to light up Tripoli’s sky and light up a child’s way.
