About Lingualism

Welcome to Lingualism! We’re a small independent publishing company founded by Matthew Aldrich, a lifelong language learner and educator. Our mission is to provide self-motivated language learners with authentic, practical materials that help bridge the gap between beginner and advanced levels—especially for those studying independently.

Matthew Aldrich

Matthew Aldrich, originally from California, has been passionate about languages for as long as he can remember. He majored in French and German at university with the goal of becoming a high school language teacher. However, his path shifted when he moved abroad to teach English—a decision that would lead to 17 years of teaching and living in Turkey, South Korea, China, and Thailand. Along the way, he also spent time living in Austria and Egypt, immersing himself in different cultures and languages. Matthew has intensely studied several languages and dabbled in many others, always driven by a curiosity for how languages work and how people learn them. His hands-on experience as both a language learner and educator deeply informs the materials he creates at Lingualism.

Our Story

It was in Egypt that Lingualism was born. Frustrated by the lack of high-quality learning materials for Egyptian Arabic—specifically, a reference for verb conjugation—Matthew created his own book: Egyptian Colloquial Arabic Verbs. Drawing from his experience using similar resources for other languages, and with help from Egyptian friends and tutors, he compiled a categorized index of verb patterns. Encouraged by the success of this first project, Matthew continued publishing resources for Egyptian Arabic, then expanded into other varieties of Arabic, as well as other languages such as Spanish and Russian.

What We Do

Lingualism focuses on creating supplemental language-learning materials that are:

  • Authentic and content-rich
  • Especially useful for intermediate learners
  • Designed for independent study, though they work well in classrooms too

Unlike large publishers that cater primarily to beginners, Lingualism thrives in the intermediate-level niche—a space often overlooked in the mainstream market. Our materials include PDF eBooks, Anki flashcards, audio recordings, and more.

How We Work

As a lifelong language learner, Matthew creates the kinds of resources he wishes had existed in his own studies. Projects are usually in languages he knows well, allowing him to manage and quality-check content effectively. He collaborates with talented native-speaking educators, translators, and content creators to produce, edit, and record materials, ensuring the highest level of authenticity and accuracy.

Over the years, Lingualism has worked with many wonderful contributors—some on single projects, and others on multiple titles. Notable collaborators include Ahmad ElKhodary, Ahmed Younis, Heba Ali, Hend Khaled, Yomna Adly, Charbel Ghaleb, Mohamed Shehata, Rita Housseiny, Ahmad Al-Masri, Sarah Khoury, Duc Minh Vu, Oksana Baranova, and Artem Orlov.
