Product Details
Whether you are a complete newcomer to the Arabic language or have previously studied Modern Standard Arabic or a colloquial dialect, the Beginning Learner’s Levantine Arabic Dictionary will help you build a solid foundation in Arabic as it is spoken today. More than a simple reference tool for looking up words, this dictionary is designed as a self-study resource to help you develop your core vocabulary and understanding of the language through headwords, translations, grammar and usage notes, example sentences, and free downloadable audio tracks.
The Beginning Learner’s Levantine Arabic Dictionary is meant to be explored. Read through entry after entry, study the structure of the example sentences, and practice your listening and pronunciation skills using the accompanying audio. Each example has been carefully selected to reinforce usage and help you internalize how the language works in real contexts.
An English–Arabic index makes it easy to find the Arabic headword you need and learn more about its pronunciation, grammar, and usage.
Which Dialect?
Levantine Arabic is an umbrella term that covers the spoken varieties found in Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Because there are small differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar between regions, it is not practical to include every variation. For the sake of simplicity and consistency, this dictionary is based on the Beiruti (Lebanese) dialect. This does not imply that it is in any way superior to other regional varieties. Learners should find it easy to communicate across the Levant using what they learn here; subtle differences can be noted and adapted to match specific regional speech as desired.

Customer Reviews
This is an excellent resource for those learning Levantine Arabic! It has many of the most important words that you need to begin understanding in communicating in Shaami. I often reference this book when I need to remember how to a word or construction, or for spelling of words in dialect.
Indispensable!
This is a must, but as another reviewer also wrote: please create more dictionaries! I’d love one for each level beginner-advanced and please, please write some for Egyptian as well! A great product, but I did notice that it lacks lots of words, especially when i’m watching tv-series/films in Levantine dialects and then the words are not in the dictionary.
This book is so incredible. I use the blogs on this website and cross reference to both the Levantine dictionary and the Palestinian verb book (my teacher is in Gaza). Amazing investment.
The layout and design of this dictionary is excellent, with very helpful comments on some of the words. The example sentences are great as they build on each other too and help to understand grammar. I am using this dictionary in conjunction with the anki deck, and I am very happy with my purchase! It's really the best beginner's dictionary out there!
I purchased this book, as well as Levantine Arabic Verbs, and couldn't have made a smarter investment in my language learning. The way both books and the accompanying audio resources systematically "unpack" what can be dense and intimidating grammatical concepts to a native English speakers, is is phenomenally clear, coherent, and concise. I can tell already that I will consult these books for years to come as my Arabic evolves. Buying both is money well spent!
