Product Details
The Beginning Learner’s Russian Dictionary is designed for beginning learners of Russian, including those preparing to take the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL) at the elementary (A1) level.
About the Dictionary
The dictionary is based on the official Lexical Minimum for the standardized TORFL test, developed by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. It includes 780 items that learners are expected to know at the A1 level. Additional entries—such as country names, common Russian personal names, and grammatical terms—bring the total to just over 1,000 headwords. Whether or not you plan to take the TORFL, this selection of vocabulary provides a solid foundation for developing competency in Russian.
Designed for Learners
This dictionary offers many advantages for beginning learners over standard Russian–English dictionaries. It features a clear, learner-friendly layout, showing only meanings appropriate for the A1 level. Grammatical information is presented in easy-to-read tables with helpful usage notes. Example sentences use only A1-level vocabulary. Traditional dictionaries can overwhelm beginners with numerous uncommon meanings, minimal grammatical guidance, and complex example sentences—this dictionary avoids all that.
Practical Reference and Study Tool
An English–Russian index makes it easy to find the Russian word you need and review its pronunciation, grammar, and usage. More than a simple reference, this dictionary is designed as a study tool to expand your vocabulary and reinforce grammar. You are encouraged to read through the entries, study example sentences, observe patterns of inflection, and practice pronunciation and listening using the accompanying audio tracks.

Customer Reviews
I am surprised at how much time I spend with this! Play the audio while reading, it's just excellent. And I agree with other reviewers: I'll look for follow-ups at higher levels. Thank you Lingualism!
The Beginning Learner's Russian Dictionary A1 is an excellent book for anyone who has some basic knowledge of Russian and may be considering taking the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language(TORFL). It is not in the traditional dictionary format. The entries are basic, essential, high-frequency words. Some special features are:
declension of nouns for help with cases
conjugation of verbs, giving most frequently used forms
adjectives with masculine, feminine, neuter and plural forms
words used in short example sentences to show usage
occasional , brief reminders of grammar points which learners need to be aware of.
Another feature is the online audio track where on can listen to the sentences given in the book.
This is a great book for anyone who knows some basic Russian and wants to review and further his/her knowledge of the language.
I ordered your book from Amazon and I have to say, it is amazing! Thank you so much for writing this, and providing the audio. Please, please consider writing this for A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.
Hello! I received my ordered e-book “Beginning Learner’s Russian Dictionary”. I think this book is very useful for those who study Russian language at first. I can easily learn Russian language with this book, so I have a question. Does Lingualism have a plan to publish “Learner’s Russian Dictionary” according to CECR levels(A2, B1, B2, C1, C2)? I want to study Russian sentences in higher level. I wait for your responses. Have a good time.
