Key Features
Kamaan Shuwayya ‘An Nafsi is a survey-based eBook for developing deeper conversational skills in Egyptian Arabic.
Designed for intermediate learners who want to move beyond basic self-description, this eBook helps you engage in richer and more natural conversations in Egyptian Arabic. Each section is built around a discussion prompt followed by multiple authentic responses from native speakers, allowing you to observe how meaning is expressed through complete phrases rather than isolated words. Compared to the first volume, this book places greater emphasis on reading Arabic script directly and using language creatively in conversation.

Detailed Overview
Once you have a handle on the basics of Egyptian Arabic, the next challenge is sustaining a deeper conversation. Kamaan Shuwayya ‘An Nafsi picks up exactly where the first book left off, helping you transition from simple self-introductions to expressing more complex thoughts, opinions, and life experiences.
Deeper Conversations with Familiar Voices
This second book follows the same ten native Egyptians, men and women from various walks of life, that you met in the first volume. However, because you are now moving toward an intermediate level, the survey questions are more demanding. You’ll explore 36 new topics that move beyond the surface, such as:
- How do you get around (transportation habits)?
- What really annoys you?
- What was your first job?
- What is the character trait you value most in others?
- What is your “dream job”?
Because the topics are more nuanced, you will notice that the participants’ answers are a bit longer and more detailed than in the first book. This naturally increases your listening stamina and exposes you to how native speakers connect ideas and tell stories.
Focus on Content, Not Searching
One of the most frustrating parts of language learning is constantly stopping to look up words in a dictionary, which breaks your mental flow. To solve this, the book uses a highly efficient glossing system. Vocabulary is glossed both at the beginning of each chapter and immediately after each specific response.
This layout ensures that you don’t have to go searching for unknown words. They are right there on the page exactly when you need them. This allows you to stay focused on the content and on meaningful chunks, the groups of words that native speakers naturally use together, making your study sessions much more productive.
Personalizing Your Progress
Just like the first book, the goal is to help you move from listener to speaker. In a real study session, use the accompanying audio to mimic the native speakers’ pitch and rhythm, then move to the practice page at the end of each section.
Realistic progress with this book means moving past textbook-style language into real-world expression. By analyzing how these ten individuals describe their neighborhoods, their frustrations, and their dreams, you gain the tools to do the same. By the end, you won’t just be repeating sentences. You’ll have developed the vocabulary and confidence to tell your own story in a way that sounds authentically Egyptian.

Customer Reviews
This book touches on so many useful and interesting areas. I am learning Arabic so that I can chat with my Egyptian cousins, and the topics in this book are perfect. In terms of a learning resource, it has been extremely well thought-out; it is user-friendly and accurate. As a language teacher, as well as learner, I particularly appreciate the clever way in which natural responses vary (and sometimes coincide), providing and reinforcing different ways of structuring answers to the same question. Another truly excellent book from Lingualism!
This is a wonderful resource for learning colloquial Egyptian Arabic. The format is very easy to use and I am coming across lots of words I hear everyday in Egypt but which are usually gone so fast in conversation that it's hard for the learner to catch them. Great to find materials that are dialectic-specific.
Great book!
