Detailed Overview
Moving from textbook Arabic to real-world conversation can feel like a massive leap. Most learners find it difficult to transition from simple, isolated words to describing their lives with the flow and natural rhythm of a native speaker. Shwayy ‘An Haali is designed to bridge this gap by providing you with authentic models of how Levantine Arabic is actually spoken in daily life.
Authentic Syrian and Lebanese Voices
This book is unique because it isn't based on a scripted dialogue written by a teacher. Instead, it is built around a real survey given to ten native speakers, five from Lebanon and five from Syria. These men and women come from different backgrounds, meaning you get to hear a variety of natural expressions, idioms, and accents.
By hearing ten different responses to the same question, you learn that there isn't just one “right” way to speak. You will see the subtle differences and similarities between the Syrian and Lebanese dialects, helping you develop a flexible ear and a more nuanced vocabulary.
Conversations You’ll Actually Have
The book focuses on the foundational questions you will encounter in any real-life social interaction. In this first volume, the participants tackle 30 essential topics, such as:
- What is your name and where are you from?
- Do you have any brothers or sisters?
- What is your favorite food?
- When do you usually get up?
- What are you afraid of?
- How would you describe your personality?
This series is designed to grow with your skills. While this first book focuses on clear, accessible responses, the participants answer an additional 36 questions in the second book, Kameen Shwayy ‘An Haali, where the topics become more complex and the answers are naturally a bit longer and more detailed.
Learning Through Chunks, Not Just Rules
To help you progress more efficiently, the book’s layout encourages you to focus on “meaningful chunks.” Instead of getting bogged down in grammar tables, you are taught to identify groups of words that native speakers naturally use together. For beginners, every word, including basic suffixes, is glossed with English translations and phonemic transcriptions. This means you can focus on the content and the flow of the language without constantly reaching for a dictionary.
A Guided Study Path
A typical study session involves listening to the accompanying audio to mimic the native speakers’ pitch, intonation, and rhythm. Once you understand how the speakers have constructed their answers, the book guides you to the practice page at the end of each section.
Here, you are encouraged to use the phrases you’ve just learned to write and speak your own personal response. By the time you finish, you won’t just have a collection of memorized sentences. You will have built a personalized toolkit to express exactly who you are and what you care about in authentic Levantine Arabic.

Great book! Starts with basic constructions and words and then gradually advances to more complex phrases. So many of the topics are things that you would naturally talk about in a second language. I have learned how to say things more naturally with this book.
A great book to start teaching beginners who want to focus on the Levantine dialect! Very enjoyable to follow with the different themes and it also reflects a diversity of dialects within the Levant. Would recommend a study of the alphabet beforehand to help with making sense of the words and extracting sound patterns.
I love it! I’ve been studying Egyptian for 14 months and now I want to learn Lebanese so I purchased Shwayy ‘an haali so I could compare the differences between the two dialects and begin to pick up some lebanese and Syrian vocab straight away. This book is aimed at the A1-A2 level, but the book is also thankfully a bit challenging. Each chapter starts off with the common phrases but most of the time the survey subjects gives lengthy answers sprinkled with an advanced vocabulary. The audio is very fast so You must repeat the segments many times over.
There aren’t many Levantine resources out on the market so everything published by Lingualism is an absolute must.
I love this book. I was studying MSA , but as a flight attendant, I couldn´t communicate with Arabs. Now, I´m more than glad, that I bought this book and of course I´m going to buy the second one right now. The passengers finally, understand me!!! I recommend you buy this book. Maybe looks hard to read in the beginning. But don´t give up!! Trust me!!!
Simply GREAT !
I really reccomend this book for anyone who is keen on learning Lebanese and Syrian dialects. Very well made, looking forward to continuing with the second book. This book helped me building my knowledge in Lebvantine dialect and I am able to communicate and understand with native speakers easily. It is a great book for whoever has some basic knowledge in MSA but prefers concentrating on a dialect. I chose this book because I am working with people coming from Syria and Lebanon and cannot communicate in other language rather than their own. This is the reason why I find this book GREAT
Full stars, I'd give an additional one if I could !
