Updated October 2026: New English narration, phrase-by-phrase Arabic practice, thoughtfully timed pauses, and a subtle chime between tracks.

Turn everyday moments into Levantine Arabic listening practice with Shwayy ’An Haali. Hear ten people from Lebanon and Syria answer real questions about their lives, understand what they say, and build confidence repeating useful phrases aloud. Spoken English translations let you follow along while walking, commuting, or relaxing, without keeping the book open.

Listen. Recall. Repeat.

Each question or response follows the same guided practice sequence:

  1. Listen to the whole Arabic recording at natural speed, to hear the message in context.
  2. Recall the meaning during a 3-second pause before you hear the English translation. Question tracks have a 2-second recall pause.
  3. Hear the English meaning in a clear female voice, followed by a 1.5-second pause.
  4. Practice the Arabic phrase by phrase. Hear manageable phrases from the original Lebanese and Syrian speakers at 80% speed, with pitch preserved. Each phrase is followed by a pause of at least 3 seconds for you to repeat it aloud. Longer phrases get longer pauses.
  5. Hear the complete original Arabic again at natural speed, bringing the phrases back together.
  6. Finish with a gentle cue: a 1.5-second pause, a soft chime, and 1 second of silence before the next track.

Der Text ist sehr deutlich gesprochen und vor allem die langsame Wiederholung ist sehr hilfreich.

Hands down the best resource out there for Arabic. It is all authentic and real world conversation.

I got this book along with the second one (Shway kamen 'an Hali) and many others in the build up to moving to and after moving to Lebanon and Jordan and I can honestly say these books from the Levantine Arabic series have been a godsend in getting to grips with dialect. Contrary to what I was told by some university Arabic teachers Amiyya (spoken Arabic) is not just a simplified form of MSA that you can simply pick up on arrival . It has very complex grammar and phonology of its own and I haven't found any better resources than those at Lingualism for getting a grips with it! Highly recommend and many thanks for providing such amazing resources!
